When Edwin Landseer created this striking painting depicting a rescue in the Great Saint Bernard Pass in the Alps, he was just eighteen years old. An unconscious man who was partially buried by snow was discovered by two dogs. In the background, they labor to locate him and warn the monks, who are already hurrying to his rescue. In the pass, Augustinian monks had built a hospice (shelter) to assist anyone in need of lodging or medical care. The giant canines they produced, renowned for their ability to locate and save intrepid travelers, are the progenitors of modern-day Saint Bernards.
